Knowledge architecture

GBOK’s architecture has two parts: a five-tier hierarchy that locates knowledge precisely, and four separated architecture layers. Everything here is from a controlled working draft and is labelled in development.

The five-tier hierarchy

Each tier nests inside the one above it, so any unit of knowledge has a stable, addressable place.

Nested hierarchy, outermost to innermost: GBOK contains Knowledge Families; a family contains Domains; a domain contains Chapters; a chapter contains Sections.
  1. Tier 1 of 5: GBOK

    The whole body of knowledge.

  2. Tier 2 of 5: Knowledge Family

A major field. Founding family: the Digital Built Environment.

  3. Tier 3 of 5: Domain

A coherent area within a family. Domain 1: Digital Built Environment Foundations.

  4. Tier 4 of 5: Chapter

A governed unit of knowledge within a domain.

  5. Tier 5 of 5: Section

The smallest addressable unit within a chapter.

Four architecture layers

These four layers are developed and governed separately, and are never merged. Select a layer to read what it is — and what it is deliberately not.

Organises what professionals should understand — the structured body of knowledge itself, from families down to sections.

Kept distinct from: Knowledge is not competence; understanding a topic is not the same as performing in practice.
