Purpose of the domain

The digital built environment (DBE) is the people, processes, information and technology through which built assets are conceived, designed, delivered, operated and eventually retired. Domain 1 sets the foundational understanding on which later domains build.

BIM as lifecycle information management

Within GBOK, BIM is positioned as lifecycle information management and professional capability — not as a 3D-modelling tool or a single piece of software. The emphasis is on how structured information supports decisions and value across the whole asset lifecycle.

People, process, information and technology

The domain treats four interacting dimensions rather than technology alone:

• People — roles, responsibilities and professional judgement.
• Process — the activities and decisions that produce and use information.
• Information — structured, governed data as a managed asset.
• Technology — the tools that enable the above, chosen vendor-neutrally.

Working status

Domain 1’s chapter architecture is a controlled working draft (Rev 2, indicative). Chapter content is not published here; only the intended structure is shown, so the architecture can be understood without exposing internal drafts.
